Paved walkways wind through a traditional lo‘i kalo (taro patch), past multiple waterfalls and up to a stunning lookout. It is in a beautiful oceanfront setting, but it is set back a ways from the ocean, so the tables far back inside the restaurant do not have much of a view of the ocean. Mama’s has been known for many years for its wonderful fresh fish preparations.
LAST SEATING TIME
Much of the indoor decor features beautiful hardwood designs and the colorful tablecloths and rattan chairs give off a relaxing country vibe. Following the sea breeze that keeps the restaurant cool, I turn toward the ocean and gaze out at the green lawn, the palm trees and the golden beach that fronts the property. The scene is straight out of a tropical paradise postcard.

Where to Stay
We've scoured the island for the best places to stay, eat, and experience Maui. Now we're sharing all the juicy insights with you. Don’t fret if you get to Maui and realize you didn’t pack a designer cocktail dress. While the restaurant is considered an upscale spot, the attire at Mama’s is what I’d call island casual.
( Is Airbnb illegal in Hawaii?
I’ll share a little about my food today, but you can find reviews for the restaurant far and wide. I mostly wanted to talk about what to expect when you dine here. It never disappoints and offers special seafood dishes while touting the individual fisherman.
Sure, it has a beautiful oceanfront setting you’d want from a Maui restaurant, but it’s quite isolated. In fact, it’s nearly an hour away from the Kaanapali resorts and about 40 minutes away from Wailea, where some of the island’s other upscale restaurants are. Mama's does the best and freshest seafood menu on the island—so fresh that the menu changes daily and it even tells you which fisherman caught what you're about to eat, and where. There are also lobster tails, short ribs, and steak.
Handicap stalls are available, or you can drop those needing assistance at our service entrance located behind the restaurant. After you drop them off, you may then valet your vehicle at our main entrance, and a valet attendant will bring the vehicle down when you finish dining. No restaurant parking is allowed in designated Beach stalls. Jellyfish patterns can also affect whether or not the bay is open so double check the day before/day of. Reservations can be made two days in advance and they open at 7AM HST.
The reservation window opens 30 days in advance at 12AM HST. The parking & entry option usually sells out in a minute, but the shuttle availability will last longer. To visit Maui’s famous black sand beach at Waianapanapa State Park on the Road to Hana, you must make reservations in advance here. The reservation booking window opens 60 days in advance at 7AM HST. There are also a limited number of tickets released two days before.
Signature Seafood Fare
A trip to Maui isn’t complete without ducking underwater to spy on clouds of striped manini fish, eagle rays and turtles. Climb into the rigid-hulled raft beside two dozen other passengers (fewer than the big tour boats) and watch for dolphins. In winter, close encounters with whales are common. As you peer into the pristine bay formed by Maui’s youngest lava flow, imagine the Polynesian wayfinders sailing here centuries ago, followed by the French explorer La Pérouse in 1786.

Here’s what I’ve come to realize….if you’re asking if something is worth it…it’s probably not…FOR YOU. At the very least, I recommend booking activities that you’re set on well before your arrival. The islands are pretty large so unless you’re just going a few miles, taking Ubers and Lyfts aren’t really feasible (you could be talking $100 one way to go to another part of the island). Also, Oahu is the only island that has a decent bus system.
Lucky for you, I’ve been multiple times (it’s a sacrifice I was willing to make for the HAT blog), so I’ve got the full rundown. But many people come to Maui ready to splurge on a meal or two. After all, a luau for two will likely be much higher, and many foodies would rather have a fresh, chef-created meal than a luau buffet.
The refit was harder and took longer than expected and cold winter arrived. It was too late in the season to sail back to Tahiti so they headed north to tropical New Caledonia to wait for spring. There was good French cooking there and good French canned goods (the NZ food and canned goods were barely edible). After a few weeks a young Marquesan came aboard as crew. For three months they explored the islands of the Marquesas, sometimes sailing to villages that had never been visited by a sailboat.
