Welcome to Peter Luger Steakhouse

peter luger steak house

A good porterhouse should make you want to keep eating it well past the point of feeling full. Soon enough, Sol had Peter Luger’s back to its former glory, and it's been on top ever since. Still under Forman family management, the restaurant has been rated the top steakhouse in New York since 1984, has earned itself a Michelin Star, and has joined the ranks of American classics. Forman Family made everything from silverware to trays to stamped-metal giftware. The manufacturing site, at 185 Broadway, served as a headquarters for sales, and what better place for Sol Forman to take prospective clients than the famed restaurant just across the street? Sol was known to eat two steaks a day – three when the trade shows came through.

Where To Eat When You’re Sick Of Being Told To Order 2-3 Small Plates Each

Peter Luger is an idolized classic that runs on wheels by a team of gloriously forthright waiters. This paean to beef doesn’t just serve legendary steaks, but a side helping of history too. Its unapologetically old-school décor tells of family gatherings, friends united and success celebrated. Credit cards remain a fanciful concept, so you’ll need to come with a few Benjamins tucked into your wallet.Start with a thick slice of bacon to get your taste buds up to speed before the steak arrives. These slabs of finely marbled Porterhouse are dry-aged in-house, then broiled to perfection and finally served with their own sauce, as well as a host of sides (think German potatoes and creamed spinach).

A Classic Arrives: Peter Luger Steakhouse to Debut in Las Vegas in 2023

The excess fat is trimmed away, with each specific cut of meat having its own process of being broken down. Forman employed a retired USDA beef inspector to teach his wife Marsha how to choose the very best beef. She became very selective and only about 20% of the meat available from New York City wholesalers met her exacting standards.

Thick Bacon

We could buy a lot of heirloom tomatoes at the farmers market for that price. We’re not saying that’s automatically an issue, but there is something satisfying and primal about an actual wedge of iceberg lettuce. This is a sad, strange pile, with an excessive pool of dressing concentrated in the middle and a heap of bacon, tomatoes, and blue cheese.

Our Locations

The menu is deceptively simple, offering a signature Luger Burger and USDA Prime steaks, as well as lamb chops and fish in season. Most patrons order a side salad and platter of German fried potatoes. Among the traditional starters are jumbo shrimp cocktail and sliced tomatoes with Luger’s special dressing. Desserts include the restaurant’s famous apple strudel and “Holy Cow” hot fudge sundae. At any given moment, the restaurant has around 2,500 short loins and upwards of a few hundred ribeyes that are dry-aging. By the time the meats reach the end of the aging process, the exterior looks desiccated and rough, which means the moisture has been pulled out of the meat.

Brooklyn Menu

You find that you’ve outgrown one another, or that your old pal Peter maybe wasn’t such a great pal after all. So you move on to more mature friends and better, more flavorful porterhouses. Known as NYC’s original steakhouse, with on-site dry-aging of beef, Peter Luger opened in Brooklyn in 1887 and decades later in Great Neck, New York. “The piece of meat would probably decrease in size by about 20 percent once the aging process is done,” says Berson.

peter luger steak house

It feels less like a salad than a sad buffet piled haphazardly on a plate. After being cut, the meat goes off to cook, where it goes from flame to plate within seconds. The only bidders were Sol Forman and his business partner, who ran a metalwork company across the street. Both had been eating at the restaurant for years and often took their clients to lunch at Peter Luger. The Great Depression and the gradual evolution of the neighborhood hit the restaurant hard and Frederick put it up for auction.

It all starts in their dry-aging room, the “Fort Knox of meat,” as co-owner David Berson calls it. The steakhouse employees select only the best cuts of meat, and place them in this room under extremely specific, highly monitored conditions in order to age each steak to perfection, for about a month. From there, the outsides are thinly cut to remove the dry edge from the meat, with the inside of the cuts serving as the “money steaks” as Berson says.

Penny Williamsburg

It was not until 1920 that Sol Forman, a seventeen year old who had dropped out of high school to work full-time lighting street lamps, established Forman Family with his siblings just across the street from Carl Luger’s. When “Carl Luger’s Café, Billiards and Bowling Alley” was opened in 1887, the restaurant quickly became a neighborhood favorite in predominantly German Williamsburg. Peter Luger owned the establishment, while his nephew, Carl, manned the kitchen.

The long line and the celebrity guests at this classic Nolita Italian restaurant get all the attention. This is one of the better things on the menu, but if you like your bacon any other way than thick and floppy with random streaks of char, you probably won’t like it very much. Non-members can add the privileges at checkout through our 30 day free trial, cancellable at anytime. The Two MICHELIN Star chef shares where he goes with his family, for inspiration, and everything in between. Luger’s was not the only thing doing in the small Brooklyn neighborhood. With the opening of the Williamsburg Bridge in December of 1903, Manhattan became far more accessible and a new crowd of businessmen crossed the East River.

They taste good with the house sauce, a combination of ketchup and horseradish that is a totally fine all-purpose condiment. So when the restaurant fell into disrepair following the death of Peter Luger, Sol was faced with the unhappy task of finding another lunch spot for his clients. Instead, he decided to try his luck at the auction of Peter Luger’s, and was the only one who did; alone at the auction, Sol was able to purchase the restaurant for the price of the real estate. With more than 4,000 restaurants in Las Vegas – and around 300 eateries just on the Strip – the competition to attract diners is fierce. This will be Peter Luger’s first domestic expansion in 60 years. However, the restaurant expanded with an international location, in Tokyo, in late 2021.

Since balcony staterooms are the most popular option aboard the ship, it would be no surprise if you found yourself with one of these. Balcony staterooms offer a little more room than, say, the interior or studio staterooms, with couches, bar areas and, of course, a large balcony accessible via floor-to-ceiling glass doors. Zoom around the Bliss Speedway with hairpin turns more than 20 mph on the two-level racetrack at sea.

Often times, the ability to purchase wi-fi before a cruise is removed at about 48 to 24 hours before embarkation. Because of this, I would recommend purchasing any wifi a week or so before the beginning of a cruise vacation. On most Norwegian Cruise Line ships, including Norwegian Bliss, there will be both family friendly and adult-only comedic performances.

#4 - Tryout Norwegian Classic Cocktails

If you do not consider these things, you may find yourself spending an extra $60 for your family of four to go on the race track, taking away from other activities. Perfect for families, these staterooms are near the kids' area and include two single beds that convert to a queen, a bathtub and additional bedding that can accommodate three guests. Located mid-ship, you will have easy access to everything.

Once onboard, guests can reference the times that all of the complimentary restaurants, as well as specialty dining, are open each day in the Freestyle Daily. This is a great indoor venue that offers awesome floor to ceiling water views. This can be a great option for guests wanting to watch the sunset or enjoy ocean views while still being inside. There are some really great laying down loungers at the very front of the Observation Lounge; however, this area becomes very busy around sunset time.

Because of their sheer size, both of these ships have plenty to explore and discover onboard. Including large theater venues and regions of the ship designed specifically for adults and those over 18 years of age. One of the other iconic features of this ship is the Observation Lounge. It’s an oversized  20,000 square foot lounge with 180-degree panoramic views on Deck 15 at the front of the ship.

Sublime, spacious suites ideal for the two of you or the whole family. Again, they strongly recommend that all passengers carry a valid US passport. In addition, they may need to provide proof of citizenship such as a certified birth certificate and a government issued ID. A US citizen under the age of 16, however, does not require a government issued photo ID. If you are budget conscious but still want an incredible trip your entire family will enjoy, then Norwegian Bliss is definitely worth the booking and offers affordable cruise fare options for select sailings.

The liner also features Heat Recovery Systems, energy saving LED lighting, improved hydro-dynamic (hull design). Norwegian Bliss is the first NCL ship with full-service Starbucks store. The first Starbucks at sea was opened in 2010 on Allure of the Seas (Royal Caribbean).

Icon of the Seas Cruise Ship First-hand Expert Review

cruise critic royal caribbean

There is technically one formal night on Mariner of the Seas sailings. However, we've seen a fairly wide spread of interpretations on board; everything from suits and formal dresses to toned down business casual tends to be the norm. On the flipside of formal night, don't forget your Hawaiian shirts for the ubiquitous Hawaiian shirt nights. Slacks or chinos plus nice short-sleeved or long-sleeved T-shirts, button down shirts, or polo shirts are more than appropriate on most nights in all dinner venues.

The Allure of the Seas Deck Plan Features Distinct Neighborhoods

Furthermore, Cruise Critic makes no guarantees for availability of prices advertised on our site. Listed prices may have blackout dates, qualifications or restrictions. -- as well as Mediterranean, Asia and Australia cruises -- attract a significant number of locals from each area, as well as Royal Caribbean's usual North Americans.

Night Greece, Italy & Turkey Cruise

During school breaks and summer, expect typical "spring breaker" crowds, including lots of college students and school-aged kids. Vision of the Seas also offers 5-night itineraries to Bermuda, 9-night cruises to Canada and New England, and longer trips of up to 12 nights to the Southern Caribbean. Vision of the Seas, part of Royal Caribbean's Vision-class of ships, is known for its stunning glass exterior -- more than 2 acres of glass were incorporated in its construction back when it launched in 1998. Nowhere is this more breathtaking than in the ship's Centrum, which spans five decks. You’ll come away having some great meals, but perhaps nothing that stands out, unless you’re willing to invest in specialty dining. Still, kids will be happy, as the line offers children’s menus in virtually every restaurant onboard.

Cabins are made for families, though storage space ultimately could be an issue with larger groups, especially with more standard accommodations. Mariner of the Seas' cabins to avoid are generally Interior or inside rooms. The lack of natural light, combined with the aging decor, means that Interior Mariner of the Seas rooms aren't exactly bright and open. Instead, you're getting a quite stereotypical and cramped cruise room. You'll likely want to avoid rooms of Mariner of the Seas Deck 3 -- both Interior and Ocean View -- as it will put you on the same floor as the Royal Theater and Studio B, where the ice show happens.

Allure of the Seas Restaurants Cover Fast Eats and Fine Dining

But most of the action centers on Decks 4, 5 and 11, which hold the cruise ship's main public spaces (Honestly, though, almost every deck has at least one destination worth a visit). Families flock to Allure of the Seas, a ship that celebrates youthful exuberance in the form of surf simulators, rock climbing walls and some of the best children's facilities at sea. But the ship also clearly appeals to active couples, mainly in their 30s to 50s. Numerous spaces, especially the foliage-filled Central Park, provide a relatively kid-free ambience.

Mariner of the Seas Review

Standouts include Chops Grille steakhouse, a six-course tasting menu at 150 Central Park, and Sabor’s Mexican favorites. All in all, Mariner of the Seas' deck plans let you float from place to place, eat, grab drinks, play mini-golf and watch movies by the pool without elbowing through rowdy crowds or enduring long lines. You'll also want to head downstairs to Deck 4 to visit some of Royal Caribbean's most iconic spots, including The Schooner Bar, which hosts piano music, lively singalongs and trivia every night. Royal Theater is right next door for song-and-dance shows as well as Mariner's riotous game show Love and Marriage. And if you're feeling lucky, have a go at the tables and slots in Casino Royale.

Icon of the Seas Review

Expect hotel-worthy beds, banquettes or pull-out couches and enough storage space for the short itineraries that the ship makes. Expect '90s-print curtains, light oak furnishings, and pink paneling. Allure of the Seas cabins include rooms with interior-facing balconies – which may pose noise problems – to two-story Crown Loft Suites with downstairs living spaces. Interiors are fairly standardized across the board, so location is the real dealbreaker within categories. The vast majority of passengers on Mariner of the Seas hail from the United States, especially the Miami drive-to market.

Royal Caribbean Mariner of the Seas Dress Code

What Vision of the Seas doesn't offer in amenities, it makes up for in an enthusiastic cruise director and crew and low-tech onboard entertainment, such as the wildly popular trivia sessions and evening game shows. Younger passengers and families seem to enjoy the opportunity to unplug and just have fun on this ship. While the cruise line is known for some of the largest ships on the ocean today, Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas is mid-sized, holding 2,050 passengers at double occupancy.

Where does Icon of the Seas sail to?

Most passengers will be from North America, but given that the ship sails from Miami – a destination known for international tourism – it won’t be uncommon for Icon of the Seas to attract global passengers. With 20 decks (18 of them accessible to guests), Icon of the Seas can seem vast and overwhelming. While you’ll have no problem clocking thousands of steps a day, the layout of the decks is smart and convenient, allowing for easy access between adjacent neighborhoods. Formal nights range from special occasion wear, like beaded dresses and suits, to sundresses -- and many passengers opt not dress up at all. There are typically a couple of theme nights, such as "1970s" and "Tropical," which are completely optional. A large percentage of travelers on Vision of the Seas are families, including people with young children and also multigenerational groups.

Passengers seeking some of the bigger attractions found on the larger ships -- such as the Flowrider, water slides, skating rinks and the like -- won't find them on Vision. The Windjammer Marketplace is a win; the company has managed to create a buffet with excellent options (including those for people with allergies) and an efficient layout that moves people through effectively. Specialty dining is also a highlight – our tip here is to buy a dining package so you can sample a few for-fee restaurants in addition to the included options. The ship’s main dining room spans decks 3-5, while other entertainment venues – like the Royal Theater, Music Hall, Casino Royale and Absolute Zero ice arena (now featuring a round instead of square layout), are also found in these decks.

cruise critic royal caribbean

Mariner's bright and busy thoroughfare is lined with shops, bars like the sharp The Bamboo Room and casual Playmaker's Sports Bar plus Cafe Promenade for free light bites throughout the day. You'll find family-friendly pools, DJs, live reggae music, the adults-only Solarium Pool, and access to the kid-friendly FlowRider, Perfect Storm Waterslides and Sky Pad. Don't worry, though, Mariner of the Seas' deck plans separate the more raucous destinations from the more tranquil ones (like your cabin -- thankfully). In 2018, Mariner of the Seas underwent a massive renovation that gave public interiors a fresh look, from the grand Royal Theater to the Promenade and the pool deck.

However, when the ship sails in Europe, the passenger mix could not be more eclectic, drawing travelers from Europe, the U.S., the Middle East, Japan, China, India and Israel. The ship also comes with a higher price tag than any of the other vessels in Royal Caribbean’s fleet. Many of its Caribbean sailings start at nearly $200 per person per night, based on double occupancy. What you get, though, is a ship that will keep you and your family busy and happy throughout your vacation; you might not even want to leave the ship when it's in port.

Vision of the Seas rooms directly below it (Deck 3) may be subject to noise. The liveliest space during the day is often Deck 9, home to the ship’s two pools and the Windjammer buffet. Royal Caribbean's dress code is casual during the day; at night there's either casual, smart-casual or formal dress code depending on the schedule. If you want to avoid dressing up altogether on any night, the extensive Windjammer Cafe is always casual dress.

Expect to hear a lot of Spanish onboard, with signage in English but most announcements provided in English and Spanish. Our fellow passengers were younger, with a good number of young families and millennials onboard. Without a doubt, opt for a Mariner of the Seas Balcony room, with private outdoor space that measures around 42 to 50 square feet on average. You can choose between an Ocean View Balcony room or Spacious Ocean View Balcony room, though you're essentially getting the same amount of space. If you want a proper hotel-room sized cabin with a balcony, consider a Junior Suite upgrade. Allure of the Seas quality and service is top-notch across all restaurants.

Meanwhile, Indeed, one of the largest job websites in the UK, reports an average yearly salary of $92,125. Royal Caribbean offers a competitive salary range for their captains as well, with figures generally falling between approximately $120,000 to $180,000 or more per year.
